Dear friends,
I thought I would write something personal about a day retreat I’m leading at the beginning of February (you can find the full details below).
The 10 Fetters is one model, or metaphor, that I’ve found super helpful when looking at the process of awakening. With this retreat I’d like to share what’s been helpful, as well as exploring the obstacles we hit when we take any model literally.
Things I’ve found helpful.
I love it as a model showing me exactly how I’m building my own ignorance, from the ground up, one delusion at a time. But also how, step by step, I can dismantle it.
It’s become clear through these teachings that ignorance is not inherent in me, akin to ‘original sin’. It’s something I’m doing, trying to ignore the way things are. In fact, it’s shown me that there can’t be anything inherently wrong with me.
When I look at all the practices and teachings with this model in mind, it simplifies the path. I can see it’s all about letting go of identification.
The main practice for that letting go to happen is paying attention, observation. Something I can practice at any moment, in the middle of a busy life (if only I could remember!).
In a nutshell, it shows me how my whole life, including my ‘spiritual’ life, has been a strategy for avoiding actually being alive! And it shows the funny side of that too.
Some obstacles in the road.
If I had to choose the most important of Sangharakshita’s teachings for my life, it would be hard, there are a lot, but I’d choose the warning about taking anything literally.
It’s the same with this teaching. When I’ve veered into seeing the 10 Fetters in a literal way, I think they’ve become quite limited. To see them as linear, sequential or clear cut is to miss the real magic in them.
You’re warmly welcome to join me on this day, whether you are someone who’s been practicing with this model for a while, or it’s completely new to you.
You can expect a little overview of the fetters, how we become fettered and how we undo those fetters. We’ll look at the basic ignorance that underlies our delusions and ask what is it we are ignoring?
Then we’ll see how we can start to undo the fetters by closely observing how identification takes hold in each of the first 3 fetters.
Hope to see you there.
Vajradarshini
P.S. I can’t promise to have all the answers, only to share a teaching I love and think is great fun!
Day Retreat, 3rd February

How did we get into this mess in the first place?
Frustratingly, Buddhism doesn’t offer many answers to the obvious question, why are we not already enlightened? How did we come to be so painfully separated from reality?
The teachings on the fetters offer us one answer to that question.
The 10 Fetters are ten illusions or beliefs that keep us from being free. In practice we start, where we must start, with the first fetter of self-view. Releasing the first fetter, our belief in a separate self, is akin to getting our hands untied. It’s the first step on the way to being free.
But there’s a whole other way of looking at the fetters, one where self-view, rather than coming first, is ‘the cherry on the cake’. The final and finishing touch to a process that started way back with the 10th fetter of ignorance.
Let’s look at how we got into this bind in the first place. It all starts with ignorance.
