I try to sit on the floor when I work, I meditate, and I do yoga and dance, so mine would definitely have to include some sort of stretchy trousers. I like a sort of ninja trouser aesthetic!
This made me think of how my dad wears a blue boiler suit when he is in his art studio, and how that’s something I really associate with him. He taught art before he retired and when we were kids would come home in his boiler suit covered in different coloured splodges.
This is wonderful. I’m also drawn to the simplicity of uniform dressing and your post had me reflecting on different periods of my life when I (largely subconsciously) adopted a uniform.
A phase of vintage wrap skirts with tanks, a phase of white v necks with black cigarette trousers. My uniform these days (manifesting as a breastfeeding mom) is a daily button down Oxford. I look forward to seeing how your uniform comes together!
Yes, I imagine being a new mum requires a special uniform of its own. One that's easy to wash. Then there's the whole question of how to dress the baby and what effect that has!
I have almost always had a uniform, first job In John lewis a horrible patterned blouse and blue aline skirt . Then nursing complete with hat! A paper one that shows how skilled you are, what level of training you have with the stripes. Then the more informal uniforms of work cultures. Nowadays it’s a gardening one, ( totally practical) a plant nursery one (less practical but functional and sometimes a bit trendy cool like the carrier co look). The gym uniform and other life. I’ve decided to stick with a few restricted colours and natural materials. Using vinted i have sold so many clothes and am trying the uniform approach of having less to choose from.
You have a good pallet of colours and naturals that all seem to go together. But then you know I approve of your style as I keep copying it! Well so far Patagonia fleece and nordic socks... but don't think I've finished!
I’ve got a blue boiler suit too for when I’m in the studio - stone carving or painting - it’s great not having to think about clothes -other than that I tend to wear the same thing all week
Thank you for these thoughts. I wore a uniform all the way thru middle school and high school, as I believe the intention was all work and focus, and no silly stuff.
So when I emerged I had no idea how to dress myself. To look like myself. Who was myself?
Now. Yes I have uniforms. I teach movement in a uniform, go to meeting in another.
But my creativity and spontaneous is all about having the right to choose what colour and what style feels like me TODAY!!
Being german uniforms definitely do not have any positive connotations for me…however, your post set me thinking on style and how mine really hasn’t changed much since I turned from a mute child into a rebellious hippie teenager overnight @ aged 13! Second hand / vintage, jeans, strong colours, often clashing- chaos basically! This includes my hairstyle, which I’m currently seriously thinking of changing, chopping off those wild but now just frazzled and dry-brittle curls - not quite ready yet…
I have some blue French overalls that I used for painting. I love them and the idea of a uniform. Since I haven’t painted for a while I haven’t worn them. Your article has made me realise that I could reverse that process; that putting on the overalls will kickstart the painting. I went and retrieved them from the cupboard and felt excited and inspired. Watch this space! I’ll post a picture of them…
Rodin's thinker is naked.
ha ha! Maybe that will be my summer uniform!

Yes, I think my uniform will have to have baggy trousers don't want anything up-tight. I'd also love a blue boiler suit for DIY and pottering

Looking forward to the pics. I'm thinking I'll wear my uniform in the week and go crazy on the weekend, well a tiny bit crazy at least.
